Achievements of the 5th Labour government (1974-79)

(We include only 16 achievements by this government as it was only in power for about 57 months, which is about 6% of the total time Labour has been in government since 1924)

This Labour Government lasted from 1974 until 1979. Harold Wilson led the government from 1974 until 1976 and James Callaghan was the leader from 1976 to 1979.  A major factor bringing it to power was the trebling of world oil prices between 1973 and 1974 with the consequent inflation.  After 1978 global oil prices doubled again and the resulting inflation was a major factor in the fall of this Labour government in 1979.
